Tax Refunds For Visitors (GST)

Visitors to Canada may apply for a refund of some of the 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) they pay in Canada.

You qualify for a refund if all of the following are true:

  • you are not a resident of Canada;
  • you spend $200 (Canadian) or more (accumulated) on goods and/or accommodation;
  • you have your original receipts (credit card slips are not acceptable) and they show a minimum purchase of $50 (Canadian) each;
  • you take the goods out of Canada within 60 days of purchase.

You can apply:

  • at a participating Canadian Duty Free Shop for a cash refund up to a
    maximum of $500;
  • by completing Form GST176, available at any customs office
    (call 1-800-461-9999 for locations). This form and other information is also available on the internet at http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/menu-eng.html; if you are leaving Canada by private vehicle or charter bus tour, you have to get your receipts validated by the proper authorities.

You can apply for a refund for:

  • goods purchased to take outside of Canada (except alcohol and tobacco products);
  • accommodation of less than one month (this limit applies on a continuous basis to each unit in a lodging establishment).

No tax refund is available for:

  • meals and beverages;
  • automotive fuels;
  • transportation, such as air, train or bus tickets and vehicle rentals
    (including RVs);
  • services such as dry cleaning, shoe repairs, auto repairs, entertainment,
    and parking;
  • cruise ship cabins or train berths;
  • purchases of an interest in a time share;
  • goods consumed or left in Canada.
