“It’s gonna get weird,” warned throat singer Tanya Tagaq last evening at the Yukon Arts Centre just before she started her performance of Nanook of the North with violinist Jesse Zubot and drummer Jean Martin. The audience remained rapt for the next 79 minutes as the trio delivered a visceral soundtrack to the 1922 silent film, Nanook of the North which was projected on a large screen during the show. Tagaq remained afterwards to answer questions. She and Zubot explained that much of the performance is improvised, making each show a unique experience shared by the players and the audience alone. The event was part of the Available Light Film Festival taking place in Whitehorse this week until February 15.
