PIERRE BERTON is a celebrated Canadian
historian who spent his childhood years in
Dawson. His book, Klondike, is a fascinating
historical account of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Did you know gold is 19 times heavier than water?
88% of all gold mined in the Yukon comes from the Dawson area.
In 1904 the Klondike was the largest gold producer in Canada and
the fourth largest in the world. See page 35 for placer gold production numbers.
As you pull into Dawson, you might wonder if you just stepped onto
the moon, as the highway is surrounded by large piles of rock. Don’t
fret, these piles are just the result of industrial mining by gold dredges.
